A memorable evening of contrast and colour

The concert proved highly effective in pairing John Rutter's soulful Feel the Spirit with the serene beauty of Fauré's Requiem. Mezzo-soprano Melanie Marshall, for whom Rutter originally wrote the work, performed with warmth and clarity above the Northampton Philharmonic Choir and the Nene Sinfonia, giving the spirituals an expressive lift and rich colour.

Under the direction of Thomas Moore, the choir moved seamlessly from the rhythmic vitality of the spirituals to the quiet contemplation of the Requiem, achieving a thoughtful balance between energy and stillness. It was an evening that stayed with the audience: spirited, reflective, and gently moving.
